Drug Screening Highlights: Let’s Learn Together What Would You Do? | Case 2 of 4

Your Usual Drug Test Is Out of Stock. Can You Substitute Another?

It’s Thursday afternoon. Your organization needs 100 drug tests for Monday, but the product you normally order is out of stock.

Your supplier has another 10-panel test available.

What would you do?

It may be tempting to assume one 10-panel drug test can simply replace another. But the number on the box doesn't tell the whole story.

Two tests labeled “10-panel” can screen for different drugs or metabolites. One might include PCP while another includes oxycodone. Depending on the products, cutoff levels, specimen types, regulatory status, intended uses, and testing procedures can also differ.

Before approving a substitute, compare the actual product specifications side by side.

Start with the individual analytes. Does the replacement screen for the substances required by your organization's testing program? Next, review cutoff levels and confirm that the testing method and specimen type fit your existing process.

Regulatory status matters too. If your program requires a particular FDA or CLIA status, verify the replacement product rather than assuming it matches your usual test.

Finally, consider your staff. A different device may have different collection steps, timing requirements, or result-reading instructions.

Having an approved backup product identified before inventory runs short can make substitutions much easier.

Fact Friday takeaway:
A matching panel number doesn't necessarily mean two drug tests are interchangeable. Compare the actual specifications before making a substitution.

Using a credible resource for drug screening supplies helps support consistency and reliability across your program.
