Drug Screening Highlights: Let’s Learn Together Common Myths About Saliva Drug Testing | Part 7 of 8

As saliva drug testing becomes more common in workplace screening programs, a few myths tend to follow it around. Let’s clear up some of the most common ones.

Myth #1: Saliva drug tests aren’t accurate.
Modern oral fluid tests use validated technology and established cutoff levels to detect specific substances. Like other screening methods, they are designed to identify the presence of drugs within defined parameters, and non-negative results can be confirmed through certified laboratory testing.

Myth #2: Saliva tests can detect drug use for weeks.
In reality, oral fluid testing is typically designed to detect recent drug use, often within a shorter window than other testing methods. This is one reason it is frequently used for post-accident or reasonable suspicion testing.

Myth #3: Saliva tests are easier to cheat.
Because oral fluid samples are usually collected in plain view, the opportunity for substitution or tampering is significantly reduced compared with methods that rely on private specimen collection.

Myth #4: Saliva testing replaces all other drug testing methods.
Not quite. Saliva testing is one tool among several. The most effective workplace drug testing programs select methods based on policy goals, compliance requirements, and operational needs.

Fact Friday takeaway:
Saliva drug testing is often misunderstood, but when used appropriately, it can be a reliable and practical option for modern workplace screening programs.
